THE HEADSHOT WORTH FLYING FOR
Why Your Trip to Honolulu Might Be the Perfect Time to Update Your Professional Image
Most people don’t plan a trip to Hawaiʻi because they need a new headshot.
But maybe they should.
Over the years, I’ve photographed professionals, entrepreneurs, physicians, executives, creatives, actors, and other clients who were visiting Honolulu from cities across the mainland and around the world.
Some were here for business. Some were visiting family. Others were simply enjoying a well-earned vacation.
And somewhere between the beach, dinner reservations, and everything else they came to Hawaiʻi to experience, they made time for something that would travel home with them:
a really great photograph of themselves.
It turns out that being away from your everyday life can be a surprisingly wonderful time to update your professional image.
YOU’RE ALREADY OUT OF YOUR ROUTINE
One of the biggest obstacles to scheduling a headshot session isn’t the photography.
It’s life.
Work. Meetings. Deadlines. Family commitments. Traffic. The never-ending list of things that somehow feel more urgent.
Then months—or sometimes years—pass while you’re still using a photograph that no longer looks or feels quite like you.
Travel creates a natural interruption in all of that.
You’re already outside your regular schedule. You’ve stepped away from the office. You may be sleeping more, spending time outdoors, or simply moving at a different pace.
That shift can make an enormous difference in front of the camera.
When you aren’t rushing from a meeting or mentally working through your next deadline, there is often a little more space to relax.
And relaxed people photograph beautifully.
A HEADSHOT CAN BE PART OF THE TRIP—WITHOUT TAKING OVER THE TRIP
You don’t need to dedicate an entire vacation day to having your photograph taken.
My Honolulu studio is designed to make the headshot experience comfortable, efficient, and highly personalized.
We prepare in advance so that when you arrive, we already have a plan.
We’ll talk about what you need the photographs for, the kind of impression you’d like them to make, wardrobe, backgrounds, and the different looks you’d like to create.
If you’d like professional hair and makeup, I can help arrange that as well.
Then, once you’re here, you can enjoy the experience, choose your favorite images, and get back to Hawaiʻi.
BUT I’M NOT PACKING A WHOLE PHOTO-SHOOT WARDROBE
Good news: you don’t need to.
For most headshot sessions, a few carefully selected pieces are far more useful than an entire suitcase of possibilities.
Before you travel, I can help you determine what to bring so you’re not guessing.
A great jacket. A couple of tops or shirts. Perhaps something slightly more relaxed or creative, depending on how you’ll use the photographs.
That’s often plenty.
And because my studio is in Honolulu, if you suddenly decide you want another option, you’re also not far from excellent shopping.
The goal is to keep the process easy.
You’re on a trip, after all.
YOUR HEADSHOT DOESN’T HAVE TO LOOK LIKE EVERYONE ELSE’S
This may be one of my favorite reasons to photograph someone while they’re in Hawaiʻi.
You have options.
If you need a classic, polished professional headshot, we can create that in the studio.
If your profession or personal brand calls for something warmer, more creative, or more relaxed, we can create that too.
And depending on the session, Hawaiʻi can give us possibilities that simply don’t exist in most cities—beautiful natural light, tropical environments, distinctive architecture, and an atmosphere that can bring a completely different feeling to your photographs.
That doesn’t mean your headshot needs to scream “I was in Hawaiʻi!”
Quite the opposite.
The location can influence the feeling of the photographs without becoming the subject of them.
The subject is still you.
MAYBE YOU’VE CHANGED MORE THAN YOUR HEADSHOT HAS
There is another reason travel can be such an interesting time for a new portrait.
Sometimes a trip marks a transition.
A milestone birthday.
A new job.
A promotion.
A business you’ve grown.
A career you’re reinventing.
A chapter you’re beginning.
Or simply the realization that the photograph you’ve been using represents a version of you from several years ago.
Your appearance may not have changed dramatically.
But you have.
A strong headshot should feel like the person who would walk into the room today—not the person you were five or ten years ago.
COME HOME WITH MORE THAN VACATION PHOTOS
You’ll probably return from Hawaiʻi with hundreds of photographs on your phone.
Sunsets.
Beaches.
Meals.
Friends and family.
Places you want to remember.
But imagine also returning with one photograph that changes the way you show up professionally.
The image you finally love putting on LinkedIn.
The portrait you send when you’re invited to speak.
The new About-page photograph that actually feels like you.
The headshot that makes you think:
Yes. That’s who I am now.
That’s a pretty good souvenir.
