Headshots v.s. Portraits: What’s the difference?
Headshots and portraits are often used interchangeably, but they actually serve different purposes.
Both are photographs of people, of course, and there can be plenty of overlap between the two. The biggest difference usually comes down to how the photograph will be used and what you want it to communicate.
HEADSHOTS
A headshot is generally a closer photograph of the head and shoulders created for professional use.
Professional headshots are commonly used for LinkedIn profiles, company websites, business directories, speaking engagements, press materials, acting and modeling submissions, and other places where someone needs to quickly recognize and connect with you.
A headshot may be photographed in the studio or on location, but the emphasis is usually on your face, expression, and professional presence.
The goal is not simply to document what you look like. A strong headshot should also communicate qualities such as confidence, approachability, credibility, personality, or professionalism.
Depending on your needs, that might mean a polished business headshot, a more expressive creative headshot, or an actor or model headshot designed specifically for casting and industry use.
PORTRAITS
Portrait photography gives us much more creative freedom.
A portrait can be a close-up, three-quarter length, full-body image, or environmental photograph. It may be created in the studio or on location, and the surroundings can become an important part of the story.
The subject doesn’t necessarily need to look directly at the camera, either.
Portraits can communicate mood, movement, personality, lifestyle, creativity, or a deeper sense of who someone is.
For professionals and entrepreneurs, portraits are often included in a personal branding photography session. We might create photographs of you working, interacting with your environment, or simply showing different sides of your personality.
These images can give your website, social media, articles, marketing materials, and other platforms much more visual variety than a traditional headshot alone.
SO, IS A HEADSHOT A PORTRAIT?
Technically, yes.
A headshot is a type of portrait—but not every portrait is a headshot.
A headshot generally has a very specific professional purpose and keeps the focus closely on you.
A portrait allows more room for storytelling, environment, movement, composition, and creative expression.
That is why many of my clients choose to create both during the same photography session.
We might begin with polished professional headshots and then create a series of wider business portraits, environmental images, or personal brand photographs that reveal more of their work and personality.
WHICH ONE DO YOU NEED?
It depends on how you plan to use the photographs.
If you primarily need a new LinkedIn image, company profile photo, actor submission, or professional directory photograph, a headshot may be exactly what you need.
If you’re updating your website, developing your personal brand, launching a new business, creating marketing content, or simply want photographs that reveal more of your personality and work, portraits or a full branding session may give you more flexibility.
And often, the best solution is a combination of both.
A strong professional photograph should do more than simply show what you look like.
It should help people see who you are and how you want to be known.
