I have been photographing local actor, Darcie Mayo, for a few years. This past month, she came to me for some new professional acting headshots and while we were shooting, she mentioned that her daughter, Shancie, was in need of some professional acting and modeling shots as well. When Shancie came to me later that month for her photography session, I found out that she did archery and just happened to have her equipment with her that day. S, of course, I immediately wanted to get a great action shot of her with her bow and arrow.
I am very passionate about girl empowerment, (remember my Girls Will Be Girls series) so this is definitely a portrait I wanted to shoot. She did not have her sport wear clothing with her so we opted for this fun juxtaposition of party dress with bow and arrow.
This portrait of Shacie only makes me want to do more work like this. Recently there are a series of strong girl portraits going around the internet that a mom had taken of her daughters. I just love any opportunity to break stereotypes and show girl power!
“Shacie Savella, currently 8 years old, started shooting archery at age 5. She started competing at age 6. My uncle brought home a bow and Shacie started practicing in the backyard until she was ready to compete.
My mother, Danelle Pulawa, owns an archery store, Island Archer, and has been operating this business for nearly 25 years, so we are fortunate to have access to a special niche sport. Everyone in our family has had our share of hunting and competing. Now, it is time for Shacie and her siblings to get involved in the sport and eventually continue the family business.
This is Shacie’s first photo shoot and I wanted to incorporate her passion for archery into this shoot. I wanted to share this moment with a well-trusted photographer and that person is Tracy.” – Darcie Mayo, Shancie’s mother.
When we asked Shancie what she though about her first photoshoot, here’s what she had to say,
“I really like my photo shoot with Tracy because she made me laugh and she is very funny. I felt comfortable in front of her. She’s awesome! That’s all I can say.” (as she laughs and takes a bite of her pizza) – Shacie Savella, age 8
Portrait photography is truly for everyone. From musicians and actors to artists and athletes, professional portrait photography allows for a captured moment, honoring your personal and professional passion.
