This fun portrait of Skylar can be found in the November Issue of Honolulu Magazine. Skylar and her wish are kicking off the Season of Wishes for Make-A-Wish Hawaii.
Earlier this year I began to work the Make-A-Wish Foundation Hawai’i. To date, I’ve photographed 23 of the Make-A-Wish kids. The most requested wish that kids have is to go to Disneyland, but sometimes the children have other wishes. The most recent child I photographed was Skylar, an 11-year-old girl whose rare auto-immune diseases do nothing to diminish her bubbly enthusiasm. She’s kicking off Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Season of Wishes campaign this year, which runs from November through December. Right now there are 70 kids here in Hawai’i whose wishes are waiting to be fulfilled.
Skylar’s wish is to create a line of fashionable, sun-safe hats for kids. She’s already met with fashion designers and knows the terminology and techniques for pattern-making. Her passion for hats began as a necessity for her medical condition and grew into a desire to help. She hopes to spread knowledge about sun-safety encourages kids like her to take joy in fashion that keeps their skin healthy.
